Montessori Art Education
Montessori arts education can be covered in a multitude of ways, and as an artist and writer I am thrilled to be able to share my experience with you. As well as working in this field, I am also studying an arts degree in England which will enable me to cover Art History as well as the act of creation. Of course, the arts are much more than this, so I will be sharing as much as I can.
In this article I’m going to give you an introduction to the arts subjects I’ll be covering within my Montessori materials, and from there I will be producing content on a regular basis. The topics I intend to share initially include:
- Art
- Artists
- Art History
- Creative Writing
This list may grow as I work through my degree because I may choose to study philosophy or the classics. For the moment, I will write about the things I know.
Montessori Art Ideas
Art is a means of expression. Whether through the fingers of a small child or the brush of a master painter, art tells stories. In this series of posts, I will give you some ideas to encourage creativity.
Montessori Art Lessons
I’m at pains to use this heading because this will not be unique to Montessori; art is an enjoyable thing to do, and that is the case whether in a Montessori classroom or elsewhere. I intend to link this to my other website, Painterly Ponders, where I will provide lessons and tutorials as well as ways for art to be used in creative education. Some may be simple, but for older children and perhaps you, I will be teaching techniques that I use in my own art. I’m looking forward to this immensely!
Montessori Arts
The arts encompass a multitude of subjects, some of which may not be obvious. As mentioned previously, I will initially be working with what I know. Introducing the arts opens up avenues of exploration and collaboration, and these things are complicit to Montessori arts education.
Children may choose to create music, a written piece, art, or even a combination of all of these. In fact, I am very interested in the relationship between music and creativity, and this is something I will be personally exploring.
I know I have writing music and painting music, both of which influence the unique nature of each work. This is the same for children. Our experiences and surroundings together with the use of our senses, is how creativity flows.
Sounds simple, doesn’t it?
The Arts and the Great Lessons
The five great lessons are a fundamental part of Montessori education, and art and creativity are a natural extension of them. Through Montessori art project based learning, children can express what they’ve learned during the exploration of the great lesson subject matter.
A story, a collage, a spoken presentation or a song- they are all a representation of the importance of Montessori Art.
A Note From Emma
As a writer, it's important for me to let my readers hear my authentic voice. This is never more prevailent than in my first book which was written to celebrate the importance of family and time together.
